Ovarian Cancer and Talcum Powder Lawsuits

Were You Harmed by Talcum Powder?

You’ll find talcum powder in nearly every American home. For hundreds of years it’s been used, topically, to soak up moisture and cover up unpleasant odors. And for most of its history, this household staple has enjoyed a wholesome, benign reputation. That began to change in 1971, when doctors discovered that talc particles (the main ingredient in talcum powder) were deeply embedded in the majority of ovarian tumors. This finding was linked to the fact that, for the previous few decades, various brands of talcum powder had been marketed as a remedy for vaginal odors. In the subsequent years, more studies have strengthened the link between the use of talcum powder in feminine hygiene and ovarian cancer. Yet the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still has issued no warnings about talcum powder and manufacturers like Johnson & Johnson continue to market it as a feminine hygiene product.

If you were a regular user of talcum powder and have since been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, you may be entitled to significant compensation for your illness. But, filing a successful product liability lawsuit against a pharmaceutical giant like Johnson & Johnson is no easy task. Such large corporations have deep pockets and employ armies of attorneys to fight for them. That’s where Kaufman & Stigger, PLLC comes in. Our legal team is not intimidated by large corporations and will fight to get you the settlement you deserve. Call our Louisville, KY offices at (800) 937-8443 for a free case evaluation.

Does Talcum Powder Cause Ovarian Cancer?

Officially, the jury is still out about whether or not there is a direct link between vaginal exposure to talcum powder and ovarian cancer, but let’s look at some of the facts:

1982 – A study published in the journal, Cancer, found that women using talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes were three times more likely to develop ovarian cancer.

1992 – A study in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology study which found that frequent application of talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes increases a woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer threefold.

1997 – A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that the use of talcum powder for feminine hygiene “contributes to the risk of developing cancer.”

2003 – The International Journal of Cancer Research and Treatment analyzed data from 16 separate studies and found that using talcum powder for feminine hygiene raised the risk developing ovarian cancer by 33 percent.

2008 – In a study published by Cancer Epidemiology found that women who used talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes had a 36 percent increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.

2013 – A Cancer Prevention Research study found a 20 to 30 percent increased risk in developing ovarian cancer for women who used talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes.

In addition, there have been 20 other studies since 1982 that found an increased risk of cancer for women who frequently used talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes.
