With school starting back up throughout Kentucky, you’re going to see a lot more school buses on your daily commute. And while there are strict laws in place that tell you and other drivers how you have to interact with these vehicles, the reality is that they’re just as much at risk of being in a collision–particularly when someone else isn’t being careful. That’s exactly what happened in a recent accident in Hardin County, according to a story from WAVE 3.

On Wednesday, September, 17, 2025, two people were injured in an accident between a car and school bus. The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) says the collision happened around 12:30 p.m., when a driver ran a stop light at the intersection of Patriot Parkway and Rineyville Big Springs Road. Fortunately, there were no students on the bus at the time of the collision. However, the driver of the bus was taken to a local medical facility with minor injuries. The monitor that was also aboard the bus was uninjured. The driver of the car that ran the stop light had to be flown to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment of what officials described as serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Can a School Bus Driver File a Car Accident Claim?

It’s hard to think about, but when you put your child on a school bus, there’s always the risk of an accident. Thankfully, the story above didn’t involve any children being injured, but as a bus driver, you’re still at risk of being in an accident when someone else runs a stop light or is being careless.

At that point, the fact that you’re a bus driver doesn’t change your rights or options. You can file an injury claim just like you could if you were driving your own vehicle. Now, whether you want to file an insurance claim out of court or a full lawsuit depends on how seriously you’re injured, but generally, you can recover things like:

  • Medical expenses (both now and in the future)
  • Lost income if you have to miss work
  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional distress
  • Reduced quality of life

If you’ve been hurt while driving a school bus, you already know how quickly things can turn upside down. Instead of focusing on your students or your route, you’re suddenly dealing with doctor visits, time off work, and the stress of figuring out how to cover your bills. That’s when you need to think about getting help.
