A motorcyclist is dead following a crash in Louisville close by the Hurstbourne Parkway on June 19, 2018.
According to Wave3 News, this accident occurred at 8AM on Bunsen Parkway near the 9400 block. As the motorcyclist was headed eastbound on Bunsen Parkway, a car traveling west allegedly made a left turn and struck the motorcycle. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist died instantly from his injuries.
The Louisville Metro Police Department is still investigating the cause of this tragic, fatal crash.
How Common Are Left-Turn Motorcycle Crashes?
Data from a recent US Department of Transportation study suggests that one of the most common reasons for fatal motorcycle accidents has to do with a car driver’s failure to yield the right-of-way. Indeed, out of the estimated 75 percent of motorcycle crashes involving another vehicle, 65 percent listed this as the primary cause. Amazingly, 40 percent of these failure-to-yield cases were due to the driver turning left and striking a motorcyclist.
The reason why these crashes are so common should be obvious: motorcycles are difficult for car drivers to spot. Even in broad daylight, car drivers involved in these crashes commonly admit to police that they simply didn’t see the motorcyclist coming.
Sadly, even if a motorcyclist realizes s/he is in a dangerous situation, there’s very little time to react. Safety experts say that most motorcyclists only have two seconds to effectively avoid a potentially fatal crash.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHSTA) found that 80 percent of motorcycle crashes result in fatality or injuries. If you’re lucky enough to make it out of a motorcycle crash alive, then you will almost certainly need serious medical attention. It’s not uncommon for motorcyclists involved in accidents to suffer hip fractures, internal organ damage, and traumatic brain injuries.
