A single-car crash in Lexington sent four people to the hospital on June 22, 2018. Safety crews said three people were ejected and one had to be extricated from the SUV as a result of this rollover accident.

According to Lex18, this crash happened on Old Paris Road at about 2:30AM. When first-responders arrived on the scene they found the SUV rolled over in a grassy area. The driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle, crashed into a tree, and flipped over.

Police transported the driver and three passengers to a local hospital for treatment. Thankfully, everyone involved in this crash is expected to survive.

While this crash is still under investigation, the Lexington Police Department said speed might have been a factor.

The Dangers Of SUVs

Over the past few years, SUVs have become one of the most popular vehicles in the world. A recent report published in Forbes revealed that SUV sales have gone up by 12 percent around the world in 2017. That’s an impressive statistic when you consider standard passenger cars dropped by 2 percent and the entire car industry only grew by 3 percent. Amazingly, SUV sales have gone up 90 percent since 2013.

While SUVs have obvious pros in terms of room and size, they do have some major safety drawbacks. In particular, SUVs are far more likely to get into a rollover accident due to their top-heavy design. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that roughly half of all Americans killed in rollover crashes each year are in SUVs. Almost 30 percent of these fatal SUV rollovers were single-car crashes.

Even though rollovers account for 2 percent of total crashes in the USA per year, about 33 percent of all traffic fatalities are from rollover crashes. Even if you’re wearing a safety belt in an SUV, your risk of death or serious injury will be extremely high. It’s important for everyone who is thinking of purchasing an SUV to give serious consideration to these safety concerns.
