A motorist hit a child in Lexington and then attempted to flee the scene of the crime on June 21, 2018. Thankfully, the injured boy is expected to survive and police were able to catch the driver involved in this crash.
According to Lex18, this crash happened on Mandalay Drive at 5PM. Allegedly, a car driver hit a 6-year-old child and kept driving. As mentioned above, the child only suffered minor injuries and the driver is now in police custody.
Police are still investigating the main cause of this crash.
Hit-And-Run Epidemic tn The USA
AAA Foundation just released a shocking report showing that hit-and-run accidents have risen by 60 percent in the USA since 2009. No other Western nation exceeds America’s 10.7 per 100,000 hit-and-run fatality rate. Sadly, the American police are only able to catch about half of drivers responsible for hit-and-run accidents.
Unsurprisingly, AAA also found that over 60 percent of hit-and-run victims are either cyclists or pedestrians. Indeed, pedestrian fatalities due to hit-and-run collisions have risen by 25 percent over the past four years.
While it’s unclear what the root cause of this hit-and-run epidemic is, AAA has a few theories. Analysts note that most hit-and-run drivers either have a record of DUI or have no valid license, so these drivers could want to avoid stricter penalties. This hit-and-run epidemic could also be linked to the increase in distracted driving.
