An attempted hit-and-run case in Knox County injured one passenger on June 7, 2018. Although the driver involved in this crash initially tried to get away from the scene, she is now in police custody.
According to Lex 18, a female pedestrian from Corbin was walking across the street close to Kentucky Highway 1232 when a car allegedly struck her with its passenger side mirror. The force of the impact was so great that it caused the pedestrian to fall into a nearby ditch.
First-responders quickly transported the injured pedestrian to a local hospital for treatment. Doctors say she is expected to survive her injuries.
Police say the driver involved in this case tried to flee the scene. Thankfully, police were able to apprehend this driver and are now investigating the main cause of this crash.
Hit-And-Run Accidents In Kentucky
A new report out of AAA found that hit-and-run accidents are on the rise in the USA. Almost 2,050 people lost their lives in hit-and-run crashes in 2016, which is a whopping 60 percent increase from 2009. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says this fatality figure is the highest ever recorded in American history.
Unsurprisingly, this report showed that pedestrians and cyclists were most likely to be killed in these hit-and-run collisions. Amazingly, study authors found that 20 percent of all pedestrian deaths in the USA over the past ten years were due to hit-and-run accidents.
To help pedestrians stay safe, AAA notes that the worst times for hit-and-run fatalities tend to be between midnight and 4AM. AAA authors encourage all drivers to pay special attention in areas with a great deal of foot traffic, especially at crosswalks. Of course, drivers who hit a pedestrian will face fewer penalties if they remain on the scene with the victim and immediately call the police.
