We received our first snowfall in Kentucky this weekend, and there were well over 100 accidents around Lexington and in Fayette County alone. Thankfully, the vast majority of these accidents were minor collisions and fender benders which did not result in any serious injuries.
Driving too fast for road conditions
The vast majority of these accidents were caused by motorists driving too fast for conditions. The snow and ice is just as slippery this year as it was last year and motorists should adjust their speed accordingly when the roads are slick. Of course, that means driving well below the posted speed limit. In fact, Kentucky has a law which clearly reads “An operator of a vehicle upon a highway shall not drive at a greater speed than is reasonable and prudent, having regard for the traffic and for the condition and use of the highway.” – KY § 189.390(2).
