A car crash in Louisville killed one motorcyclist on June 30, 2018.
According to Wave3, this crash occurred around 3AM on Broadway. Before the crash, the motorcyclist was traveling west on Broadway. Allegedly, a female car driver made a sharp left turn on South 2nd Street and struck the motorcycle.
Tragically, when first-responders arrived on the scene, they discovered the motorcyclist dead on the pavement. The car driver involved in this accident remained on the scene and is cooperating with police. Although this crash is still under investigation, police believe DUI was the major cause.
Troubling DUI Trends
Believe it or not, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that almost 30 Americans are killed in DUI-related crashes every day. About 10,500 Americans die annually in DUI accidents. Sadly, many safety officials don’t believe these numbers will go down anytime soon.
One reason public health experts are pessimistic about the future of DUI crashes has to do with the increase in marijuana usage while driving. As the legal restrictions on marijuana become laxer across the nation, more people are operating vehicles under the influence of cannabis.
The Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD) organization found that marijuana has the highest increase of any drug in recent years going from about 8.5 percent to 12.6 percent between 2007 and 2014. MADD also found that drugs other than alcohol accounted for almost 20 percent of DUI traffic fatalities in recent years.
It’s important for anyone taking prescription medications to talk with their doctor about possible side effects before getting behind the wheel.
