A one-car rollover accident in Calloway County Sunday, May 20, 2018 critically injured one passenger.
According to WSPD Local 6, this crash occurred on 641 South at approximately 4:30PM. While traveling northbound, one car allegedly hit a right shoulder and flipped over numerous times before landing on its wheels. In addition to the driver, there were two passengers in this vehicle.
Safety officials only had to transport the passenger sitting in the front seat to a local hospital for treatment. As mentioned above, doctors believe this female passenger will survive. Investigators are now looking into the cause of this crash.
Fatality Of Rollover Crashes
Although rollover crashes aren’t the most common car accident, they are amongst the most fatal. Figures from the Institute for Highway Safety show that at least 7,200 Americans are killed in rollover crashes every year, which represents approximately 33 percent of all traffic fatalities in the USA. This is quite an amazing statistic when you consider rollover crashes only account for 2 percent of total accidents in America.
People who drive SUVs or trucks are at the highest risk for getting involved in a rollover crash. This is simply due to the fact that these vehicles tend to be top-heavy. Believe it or not, 90 percent of all SUV rollover crashes only involve one vehicle. Sadly, even if people survive these traumatic crashes, they usually sustain major injuries to the brain and/or spine due to a roof collapse.
It’s incredibly important to consider this increased rollover risk if you decide to drive an SUV or truck. At the very least, be sure you always wear your seat belt when in your vehicle to reduce the chances of a fatal accident.
