The Dangers Of Left Turns
Although making left turns is common on America’s roadways, it’s also the cause of many serious accidents. Some experts believe left-hand turns are so dangerous that they should be banned across the USA!
Recent data from the US government found that 53 percent of pedestrian collisions are caused by left turns. Contrast that with only 5 percent caused by right turns. Even more startling, a study out of New York found that drivers were three times more likely to get involved in a fatal pedestrian accident than those taking a right turn.
Left turns are also one of the primary causes behind motorcyclist accidents in the USA. The National Highway Traffic Association (NHTSA) discovered that over 35 percent of deadly motorcycle accidents in the US involved a driver taking a left turn.
Traffic safety experts recommend drivers only take left turns with extreme caution, especially when on major roads. In the warmer weather, take extra time to scan the roadways for motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
Unfortunately, many people who cause left turn accidents were distracted.
