It’s incredibly unfortunate that people in Louisville continue to drive while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. This is despite virtually everyone understanding why it’s so dangerous. The people that are keenly aware of the dangers, though, are usually the ones who end up the most injured. This is exactly what happened in a recent accident in Shively on Monday, May 25, 2026, according to a story from WAVE.
The Shively Police Department (SPD) confirmed that one woman was killed, another woman was critically injured, and three others were hospitalized when a 45-year-old man drove into them at a bus stop at the corner of Dixie Highway and Rockford Lane. Officers responded around 7:55 p.m. Once they arrived, they found the woman deceased and concluded that she had been waiting at the bus stop at the time of the collision. Nearby was the other woman, who had suffered what was believed to be life-threatening injuries. Yet another woman was nearby with two others who were hospitalized for minor injuries.
The man that was driving the car was charged with DUI, murder, vehicular assault, criminal mischief, wanton endangerment, and several other traffic charges. The name of the woman that was killed in the collision has not been released.

Steps to Take After a DUI Collision as a Pedestrian
When you or someone you care about is at a bus stop, you’re still a pedestrian. And it’s one of the most vulnerable scenarios anyone can be in—especially when there’s people on the road that are under the influence. All that doesn’t change what needs to be done if there’s been a collision though. Here’s what to do:
- If you’re still in harm’s way near traffic, try to move to a safer spot nearby. Don’t worry about anything else until you’re out of danger.
- Call 911 right away even if your injuries feel “manageable” at first. This will get an ambulance/police to the scene.
- Take pictures/videos if you can. Focus on the bus stop area, the vehicle involved, visible injuries, debris, skid marks, or anything that helps show what happened.
- If the driver is still there, try to get their name, contact details, and insurance information. The license plate is especially important if that’s all you can manage. And if anyone nearby saw it happen, their statements can be really helpful—names and phone numbers are enough for now.
- Don’t accuse the driver of anything, just wait for the police to make any decisions about the driver being under the influence
- Once things settle down, hang onto all medical paperwork, bills, discharge instructions, and anything tied to your treatment.
Even when you’re careful, a situation like this can still happen in an instant. And while the focus should always be on healing first, there are legal options available when a driver makes a reckless choice like driving under the influence.
