Interstate accidents in Louisville are almost always more serious in terms of the damage. Whether it’s one car or multiple, the speeds, crowded lanes, and various other factors are all in play. And while every accident is different, the more cars that are involved typically mean the damage is spread out.
A recent story from WLKY about one of these accidents shows this clearly. The driver of a dump truck was seriously injured when he collided with two other dump trucks who were caught up in a previous accident between two cars in the southbound lane of I-65 on November 12, 2024.
Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) responded to the accident scene, where they found the three dump trucks and two other vehicles that were involved. An initial investigation found that the accident was originally caused by two drivers, both of which fled the scene. The three dump trucks then crashed into each other, leaving at least one driver with serious injuries. He had to be pulled from the vehicle by Louisville Fire and Rescue teams, and he was rushed into surgery at University of Louisville Hospital. The other drivers of the other dump trucks suffered minor injuries.
All southbound lanes of 65 were closed for several hours as crews investigated and cleared the scene. All three dump trucks leaked significant amounts of diesel fuel that needed to be cleaned, but all three lanes were opened back up by 10:00 a.m.
Can You File an Injury Claim If You’re Hurt While Driving a Work Truck?
You actually have the same legal rights as a dump truck driver–or anyone driving a work vehicle– at the time of an accident. When you’re hurt because someone else was negligent, you can file an injury claim. It doesn’t matter what vehicle you’re in at the time or if you’re on the clock.
In fact, you actually have more options if you’re hurt while driving a work vehicle–you can even file a workers’ compensation claim to provide you with short-term benefits as you get better.
Mostly, though, you can file one or both of the following to take care of your losses:
- An insurance claim
- A personal injury lawsuit.
Filing a claim can help you recover:
- Medical expenses
- Lost income from missed work
- Permanent disability if you’re permanently injured
- Repair costs for any damaged personal property
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress
- Reduced quality of life
- Wrongful death expenses, for fatal injuries
- Punitive damages, in cases of intentional negligence
