Everybody in Louisville is vulnerable to vehicle accidents, regardless of what their job is or what they were doing at the time. And unfortunately, even off-duty police officers can be involved. If this happens to you, it brings up certain questions about what your rights and options are. But first, a recent story from WAVE3 shows what can happen when there’s an accident with a semi-truck.

An off-duty Louisville Metro police officer was injured in a collision with a semi-truck on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. The collision happened at the intersection of Fern Valley Road and Roederer Drive around 11:00 p.m. Deputies arrived and found the off-duty officer in his Ford F-150 pickup truck. He had to be extracted before he was taken to University of Louisville Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was unhurt. LMPD’s Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.

Can an Off-Duty Police Officer File a Claim If They’re Injured in an Accident?

As an off-duty police officer, you might be wondering what your options are when you’re hurt in a vehicle accident. The answer is pretty simple: you have the same rights as anyone else that’s injured because of someone else’s carelessness. This means you can either file:

  • An insurance claim out of court.
  • A personal injury lawsuit.

Now, whichever option you decide to go with is probably going to depend on how seriously you’re injured and what kind of information you have to go off of. And while our team can give you guidance there, it’s ultimately about doing what you can to get full “damages” for your injuries. In a truck accident like the one above, that could involve things like:

  • Medical expenses, both now and in the future
  • Lost income or loss of benefits from missed work
  • Repair/replacement costs for your vehicle and any other damaged personal property
  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional distress
  • Reduced quality of life
  • In fatal accidents, wrongful death expenses

No matter where you are or what your background is, you could find yourself facing a similar situation in Louisville. When that happens, working with our Louisville truck accident lawyers at Kaufman & Stigger, PLLC can make all the difference in how your situation plays out.
