A moped is a mode of transportation often categorized somewhere between a bicycle and a motorcycle. Unfortunately, the moped shares the vulnerability of both when out on the road.

Moped Dangers on Two Wheels

Mopeds, like bicycles, move at slower speeds than most other traffic and that can put them in dangerous proximity to other vehicles trying to pass. In Louisville and across Kentucky, a moped is only allowed a top speed of 30mph.

Mopeds are also smaller and narrower than cars and trucks.  A careless driver can overlook a moped, just as they can miss seeing a motorcycle.

The injuries in any moped collision can be severe and even deadly because the rider is so exposed without the benefit of being enclosed and protected like in a car or truck.  Victims in a moped collision can be tragically young too. In Kentucky, you can get a Moped license at 16-years-old

Louisville Deadly Moped Collision

A man has died from his injuries suffered in a collision between a Corvette and a moped. Louisville police were on the scene on Sunday night July 5th, 2020.  Investigators say the moped driver was on Bardstown Road when the driver of the Corvette struck him from behind. Wave3TV reports the 46-yr-old moped victim was taken to the hospital and later died. It is not known if the Corvette driver will face charges.

This tragic incident shows the dangers along our streets for any moped driver.  Nighttime can be especially hazardous for riders on two wheels.

Seeking Wrongful Death Actions for a Moped Accident

A deadly moped accident is, understandably,  a shock to the victim’s family.  A loved one left for a ride and never came back.  The grief in the aftermath of a devastating accident is one thing the family will face. They may also wish to hold the at-fault driver responsible for his or her actions. Family members of the victim can file a wrongful death case against the driver. To recover damages, the family member must show that the driver was negligent in his or her conduct, causing the death of the cyclist.
