A lot of pedestrian accidents in Kentucky happen due to similar factors and similar places–busy intersections with heavy traffic or distracted drivers in shopping centers frequently come to mind. But it can also happen to you in your own neighborhood, with vehicles you see every day. That’s exactly what happened on Friday, July 25, 2025 in Somerset, according to a story from LEX 18. The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of an accident involving a 54-year-old woman and a garbage truck on Water Cliff Drive.

Deputies say that the woman was walking her dog when the garbage truck struck her. She was treated at the scene by Pulaski County EMS before being taken to a local hospital. While at the hospital, her injuries were to the point that she needed to be flown to UK Hospital in Lexington for further care.

The driver of the garbage truck was not injured, and the sheriff’s office is still investigating the incident.

What Should I Do If I’m Hurt in an Accident With a Garbage Truck?

It’s incredibly difficult to be a pedestrian and hurt in an accident with a vehilce–let alone one as large as a garbage truck. And while it does bring up certain questions about who’s responsible, the first priority you need to focus on is your health and safety. To that end, here’s what you should do if you’re in a similar accident:

  • Call 911 – The first thing you need to do is get to safety and call 911. That will prompt a response from emergency services, who will dispatch an ambulance and local police to the scene. From there, get help from EMTs and work with the police to piece together what happened.

  • Get information from the driver – It’s important to get as much information as you can from the garbage truck driver. Start with contact and insurance information, but also try to get information about who the driver works for. If it’s the city or county, that could change how the claims process plays out. If it’s for a private company (like Waste Management), they’ll have their own process.

  • Take pictures and videos of the scene – Putting together a picture of the scene with photos and videos is also important. Take pictures and videos of where the collision happened, your injuries, the truck, and anything else that shows what happened. This could be skid marks, signs, traffic lights, etc.

Obviously, this is much easier said than done when you’re facing the pain and chaos that happens in one of these accidents. If you can’t get this information, don’t worry, our team of our Kentucky pedestrian accident lawyers can step in and help you.
