Being in a motorcycle accident as a rider is always dangerous, regardless of the other vehicle. But these kinds of accidents are even worse when the other vehicle is a Jeep. Basically, not only do you have to deal with the impact of the motorcycle crash, but also the problems that come with colliding with a much heavier, larger vehicle–doubling the intensity most of the time.
A recent accident left a motorcyclist in Louisville facing critical injuries, according to a story from WDRB. A Louisville Metro Police Department spokesperson said that the accident happened near Dixie Highway and Dixie Garden Drive around 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. Investigators say the driver of the Jeep was heading south along Dixie Highway when they collided with the motorcyclist, who was trying to turn left into a Kroger parking lot. The rider was thrown from their motorcycle, and despite wearing a helmet, was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital with critical injuries.
The driver of the Jeep stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, and there are no charges pending currently. All lanes of Dixie Highway were closed as crews cleared the scene and investigated, but it was reopened hours later.
Are Left-Turn Motorcycle Accidents More Serious?
Every motorcycle accident is different, even ones like in the story above where a vehicle collides with you as you’re turning left. At the same time, these are among the most common types of motorcycle accidents there are in Louisville. But it’s not about how often they happen, it’s about the aftermath–and that usually means serious injuries like:
- Broken bones and fractures
- Head injuries, including traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
- Internal organ damage from blunt force trauma
- Neck and spine injuries
- Sprains and strains
- Cuts and bruises
- Burns
- Emotional and mental trauma
Helmets, protective gear, and following traffic laws can reduce the risk of motorcycle accidents, but crashes can still happen–especially in heavy Louisville traffic during peak hours.
If you’ve been injured in a motorcycle accident, you have the right to file a claim to recover damages like:
- Medical expenses and ongoing care needs
- Lost income or lost earning potential
- Repair/replacement costs for your motorcycle and any other damaged property
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress
- Loss of quality of life
- Wrongful death expenses in fatal accidents
While you have the right to file an injury claim, managing the process on your own can be overwhelming while you’re trying to recover. From paperwork to dealing with insurance companies, it’s a lot to handle.
