Generally, a lot of car accidents in Kentucky are just that–accidents. It’s easy to look down at your phone or hit the gas to try to beat a changing traffic light, and while that can easily lead to a collision, there’s other situations where an accident–and your injuries–happens because of someone else’s intentional act. This is exactly what happened in a recent collision in Georgetown, according to a story from WKYT.
One person was injured and taken to a local hospital after a collision involving a police chase and stolen vehicle on Monday, August 4, 2025. Georgetown Police Department deputies were alerted to a possible stolen vehicle being driven into the city. They found the driver and attempted to pull them over, but the driver did not stop.
This led to a chase where the vehicle eventually crashed into another driver at the intersection of Cherry Blossom Way and Outlet Center Drive. One person from the car that was hit was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the stolen vehicle was arrested and taken to the Scott County Detention Center, where police say they found drugs on him and believe he was under the influence.
Can You File a Claim Against a Driver of a Stolen Vehicle?
It’s scary to think about what might happen when you’re in the path of a police chase, but it’s something that can happen. Obviously, if somebody is speeding and driving recklessly trying to get away from police, it puts everyone else on the road at great risk. And the faster and more reckless the other driver is, the more serious the collision–and your injuries.
But this brings up an interesting question: can you file a claim against the driver of a stolen vehicle? The answer is yes. Your rights don’t change because of someone else’s criminal act. The difference is that your claim would unfold in civil court, rather than criminal. Better yet, someone driving a stolen vehicle away from police is a stark example of negligence, which makes figuring out fault fairly straightforward.
The person that collides with you while trying to get away from police is going to be liable for your injuries and other damages from an accident, like:
- Medical expenses (both now and in the future)
- Lost wages from missed work or a loss of earning potential for permanent injuries
- Repair/replacement costs for your car
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress
- Reduced quality of life
