Driving while intoxicated is a huge problem across Kentucky, and unfortunately, it’s rarely a one-time mistake. That’s why Kentucky law punishes people that drive under the influence so harshly—to hopefully act as a deterrent. But despite everyone’s best efforts, these punishments sometimes fall short. And that’s when serious car accidents result. That’s exactly what happened in Russell County on Monday, June 1, 2026, according to a story from the Lexington Herald Leader.
Kentucky State Police (KSP) deputies responded to a call about a two-vehicle accident on Cumberland Parkway around 2:30 p.m. Once they arrived, they found that a 28-year-old man in a Kia Optima had veered off the road, overcorrected, and collided with a Jeep Cherokee being driven by a 60-year-old man. Both vehicles were headed in the same direction at the time of the collision, but the man in the Jeep Cherokee later died of his injuries at a nearby hospital.
The 28-year-old man refused medical treatment, but KSP noted signs of impairment. Later, they charged him with aggravated DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. This was the man’s second DUI charge, according to KSP. He is being held on a $1 million bond in the Russell County Detention Center.

What Information Can Help a DWI Accident Claim in Russell County?
The story above pretty clearly lays out why a DWI accident is so hurtful. You could just be driving along like you normally do, and the next thing you know, another car is colliding with you. Chances are, you won’t even know that this other driver is impaired. But that doesn’t necessarily matter right away. If it’s safe, you’ll want to try to get the following:
- Photos and video from the scene showing how everything looked right after the collision—vehicle positions, road conditions, debris, and damage.
- Witness statements from anyone who saw what happened or noticed the other driver’s behavior before or after the collision.
Later, you’ll also want to try to track down:
- The police report, especially anything about intoxication, field sobriety tests, or an arrest
- Dash cam or body cam footage that may show how the driver was acting before or after the collision
- Medical records tied to the care your loved one received after the incident
- Personal notes or anything you’ve put together that helps make sense of the timeline
- Funeral and burial expenses connected to the loss
The idea is pretty simple: you want to show how you believe the accident happened, and what the aftermath is like. You might be able to do this on your own, but if the collision is serious enough, you (or someone you care about) might not be able to. That’s when you need help, and that’s where our Kentucky DWI accident lawyers at Kaufman & Stigger, PLLC can step in.
