Kentucky Farmers and Others Injured by Monsanto’s Roundup

As of June of 2019, both federal and state juries in California have awarded large payouts to people who have alleged that they were given cancer by using the popular herbicide Roundup. The allegations in all three suits are generally the same: long-term exposure to glyphosate—the active ingredient—can cause non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) which is a form of cancer.

In all three cases, the victims used Roundup, or it’s industrial version Rangerpro, for years as a weed killer which allegedly was a significant factor in getting lymphoma.

Does Glyphosate Cause Cancer?

Depends on who you ask. The truth is, no one is actually saying the weed-killing agent causes cancer, rather it increases the risk for getting cancer. Medical experts for the three plaintiffs who have successfully sued say that they believe that glyphosate “substantially increases the risk of getting non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.”

The World Health Organization says that glyphosate is “probably” a carcinogen, and a study done the by the University of Washington that studied a bunch of other studies, concluded that “exposure to GBH’s (glyphosate-based herbicides) are associated with an increased risk of NHL.”

Monsanto—the company that developed and produces Round-up—says that over 800 studies, the EPA and numerous governments all over the world have concluded that glyphosate is safe.

Does it Matter?

In the U.S. system of justice, all those studies that say it does or doesn’t are not the final say, rather a jury is. So far in court, Monsanto is 0-3 with over $2 billion awarded against them from juries that said glyphosate does cause cancer and those plaintiffs got cancer because they were exposed to it for years.

What’s Next?

Currently there are over 4,000 cases against Monsanto for people getting cancer after exposure to Roundup. Legal experts believe that these three trials show that Monsanto is vulnerable to numerous lawsuits that could do the same way, and the soon a class-action lawsuit will be filed and the company will then settle to avoid thousands of costly trials.

What if I got NHL After Using Roundup?

If you have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and have been exposed to Roundup for a long period of time, then you might be eligible to sue Monsanto for your injuries. As we have learned from the three cases that have concluded already, the exposure can be as much as 30 years or as little as five years.
