When someone is driving the wrong way on the interstate, you can be reasonably sure that it’s one of two things: confusion or driving while impaired. Either way, it’s an incredibly dangerous situation for everyone involved. At best, there’s probably going to be at least one minor collision as everyone tries to adjust on the fly. This is what happened in a recent crash in Louisville, according to a story from WAVE.

Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) deputies responded to the scene of the accident around 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. The initial collision near Mellwood Avenue on I-64 East happened when a 28-year-old man entered the interstate going the wrong way. He continued on, colliding with several more vehicles before exiting his car and trying to escape on foot. LMPD deputies quickly found him, and he was arrested for driving under the influence, reckless driving, fleeing the scene of an accident without providing aid, and wanton endangerment.

One driver that the man collided with was taken to University of Louisville Hospital, but is expected to recover from their injuries. All the other drivers involved walked away unhurt, but had minor damage to their vehicles.

What Does a Car Accident Claim Actually Cover?

Any car accident is going to cause some level of damage, as the story above lays out. Whether it’s damage to your car or injuries, the entire point of the claims process is that it allows you to get financial support for your losses–and the person that caused the accident is usually the one that’s responsible for covering them.

But you might be wondering what a claim actually covers. And while every claim is unique, there’s certain categories of “damages” that you can get when you file either an insurance claim or a lawsuit:

  • Medical bills – These cover ER visits, hospital stays, surgeries, rehab, prescriptions, and any future care you’ll need for your injuries.

  • Lost income – This includes paychecks you’ve already missed and future earnings if your injuries affect your ability to work.

  • Vehicle damage – This covers the cost to repair or replace your car, along with a rental if you need one.

  • Pain and suffering – This is related to the physical pain you’ve experienced—from the crash itself through your recovery.

  • Emotional distress – These cover the mental and emotional effects, like anxiety, depression, PTSD, or trouble sleeping.

  • Loss of enjoyment of life – This applies if your injuries keep you from doing things you once loved–whether it’s hobbies, family activities, or just everyday routines.

  • Wrongful death-related losses – If a loved one was killed in the crash, this includes funeral costs, lost income, and the emotional toll on your family.

In Kentucky, you typically only have one year from the date of the accident to file a claim. Waiting too long could cost you the chance to recover anything. That means it’s important to act quickly and get the right guidance early on. That’s where our Louisville car accident lawyers at Kaufman & Stigger, PLLC can step in.
