There’s a lot to enjoy when riding your motorcycle in Kentucky. But probably the biggest drawback isn’t just the likelihood of an accident, but in how seriously injured you could be. This is compounded when a car is involved.

According to a story from WSLV 3, a 63-year-old man was killed when his Harley Davidson motorcycle was struck by a Buick Enclave SUV driven by a 70-year-old man at the intersection of Kentucky Dam Road and Eagles Nest Drive in McCracken County on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

The accident was investigated by the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office, who say that the motorcycle was heading east on Kentucky Dam Road when it crashed with the Enclave, which was crossing the road at the time. The man on the motorcycle was transported to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The man in the Enclave was also taken to the hospital with injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by local fire and ambulance crews, as well as the McCracken County Coroner’s Office. No charges have been filed at this time.

Can You Protect Yourself in a Motorcycle Accident?

Unfortunately, accidents like the one above are fairly common throughout Kentucky. But that doesn’t mean that every motorcycle accident is going to be fatal. That said, if you ride a motorcycle, you need to do what you can to protect yourself in the event of an accident. So, always remember to do the following:

  • Wear the right gear – Put on helmets, gloves, boots, and protective clothing covering your arms and legs to stay safe in case of a crash.
  • Be alert and cautious – Keep an eye out for dangers on the road and ride carefully, especially at intersections and around other vehicles.
  • Follow the law – Stick to speed limits, use turn signals, and obey traffic signs to avoid accidents.
  • Stay sober – Never ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol—it impairs your judgment and reaction time.
  • Take safety courses – Improve your skills and learn how to avoid accidents by taking motorcycle safety courses.
