Riding a motorcycle in Louisville might be exciting, but it comes with serious risks. These risks are no more evident than when there’s an accident with another vehicle. Serious injuries usually result, and in most cases, these accidents turn fatal. This is exactly what happened in a recent motorcycle accident in Louisville, according to a story from WHAS 11.

A man riding a motorcycle was killed when he was hit by a pickup truck on Frankfort Avenue on Friday, September 20, 2024. Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) deputies were on the scene around 7:00 p.m. Investigators say the accident happened at the intersection of Frankfort Avenue and Stoll Avenue, when the driver of the pickup truck was trying to turn left and struck the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, a 39-year-old man, was taken to University of Louisville Hospital and later died of his injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was unhurt in the collision.

What Causes Left-Turn Motorcycle Accidents?

As the story above shows, any time there’s an accident between a motorcycle and vehicle, it’s going to be pretty serious for the person riding the motorcycle. This is true regardless of the type of accident.

In that respect, a left-turn accident where the driver is trying to turn left and collides with a motorcycle isn’t really noteworthy. However, a left-turn accident is one of the most common ways that these things happen. Usually, they happen because:

  • Not yielding – Drivers may fail to yield to oncoming traffic, either by misjudging the speed or distance of your motorcycle or by becoming distracted while making the turn.

  • Driver error – Drivers might misjudge the space between their vehicle and your approaching motorcycle, leading to collisions with little time for you to react.

  • Distractions – Distractions like mobile phones or passengers can pull a driver’s attention away from the road and other vehicles, including motorcycles.

  • Driving impaired – Impaired drivers may have slower reaction times and poor judgment, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

  • Driving too fast – Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to react to oncoming traffic, raising the chances of collisions during left turns.

Like the story above shows, left-turn accidents result in serious, even fatal injuries like:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Fractures
  • Road rash
  • Internal injuries
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Psychological trauma

Understanding these causes and potential outcomes, can lower the chances of accidents and have safer rides in Louisville. Keep in mind that even with safety measures, motorcycle accidents can still lead to serious injuries.
