Every car accident has its own unique circumstances. But the reality is that some accidents are more serious than others, and generally happens when there’s more than two vehicles involved. A story from WLWT demonstrated just how devastating a multi-car accident can be, with two people being killed and several others injured in a three-car accident in Maysville on Thursday, June 13, 2024.
According to the Kentucky State Police (KSP), the accident happened when a Buick Century was rear-ended by another car on AA Highway in Maysville. The impact sent the Buick Century into the eastbound lane of the highway, where it struck a Nissan Sentra head-on. A 33-year-old passenger in the Sentra and a 20-year-old passenger in the Century were both killed in the accident. Four others were injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment, one of whom was a juvenile.
The KSP’s investigation was assisted by the Mason County Sheriff’s Department, Fire and EMS, and Coroner’s Office. The crash is still being investigated.
Why Are Multi-Vehicle Accidents More Serious in Kentucky?
Obviously, the more vehicles that are involved in an accident, the more chances there are that you and others will get hurt. It’s not all that difficult to see why: the more cars that are involved means more impacts and other contributing factors to injuries and damage. As the above story shows, multi-vehicle accidents are also typically severe enough to cause fatal injuries.
But in order to fully understand why these accidents are more serious, it’s helpful to look these factors more in-depth:
- More severe impacts – Multi-vehicle accidents frequently happen at higher speeds, which increases the force of impact and the resulting injuries.
- Limited space and reaction time – These accidents frequently occur in congested areas like highways or crowded streets, making it challenging for drivers to evade collisions.
- Multiple areas of impact – One of the greatest dangers is the chain-reaction nature of multi-vehicle accidents. Vehicles may be struck repeatedly from different directions, significantly increasing the risk of severe injuries or fatalities.
- Worse psychological trauma – While any car accident is traumatic, multi-vehicle collisions can cause heightened psychological distress due to the greater number of victims and impact severity, even if physical injuries are absent.
After a multi-vehicle accident, it’s crucial to get medical help right away since some injuries might not show up immediately. These accidents can also be complicated when figuring out who is responsible, so it’s important to collect detailed information about the vehicles involved.
