As a pedestrian, you have to do everything you can to keep yourself safe when walking to and from places in Louisville. This is true even though you generally have the right of way, and the fact that most drivers know this. Unfortunately, when you or any other pedestrian is involved in an accident with a car, you will be facing severe injuries and even fatalities.

A 46-year-old woman was killed on Friday, January 12, 2024 when she was struck by a vehicle on Pleasure Ridge Park in Louisville, according to WAVE3. Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the woman. LMPD says that she was struck by the vehicle at the Fury Way intersection of Dixie Highway around 6:20 p.m. She was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital, where she later died of her injuries. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and cooperated with LMPD’s Traffic Unit, who investigated the accident.

How to Avoid Pedestrian Accidents in Louisville

Obviously, the best way to avoid the harm and damages that come with these types of accidents are to not get in them to begin with. However, as a pedestrian, you are at a disadvantage when faced with collisions with vehicles. They can happen even if you take all of the necessary precautions, like wearing bright clothing, making eye contact with drivers, only using crosswalks, and staying alert.

This is due to the fact that drivers, even with these measures, either won’t see you or can simply misjudge the situation. Regardless, here’s what you can do if you are involved in one of these accidents:

  • Take care of yourself – Make it a priority to look after your health and well-being. Even seemingly minor injuries could have delayed symptoms, so it’s crucial to promptly consult with a doctor.

  • Report the incident – Contact local law enforcement to come to the scene and create an accident report, a valuable document for the claims process.

  • Gather information – Obtain contact and insurance details from the other driver or anyone else involved, and make sure to provide your information in return.

  • Visual evidence – Use your phone or camera to document the accident scene, including vehicle damage, injuries, and relevant road conditions.

  • Notify your insurance company – Regardless of fault, keep your insurer informed to make sure they’re aware of the situation.

  • Preserve evidence – Maintain records of medical treatment, bills, and other expenses related to the accident for your case.

  • Follow your recovery plan – Always follow the instructions provided by your doctor for recovery, showing you’re taking proactive steps towards healing.

  • Be cautious with statements – Avoid discussing the accident with insurance companies without seeking our advice. Refrain from admitting fault or making statements without proper guidance.

  • Document the aftermath – Keep records of how the accident has impacted your life, noting missed work, emotional distress, or changes in daily activities.
