Every car accident in Kentucky is ultimately viewed the same way by the law. But in the real world, certain kinds of accidents are much more serious than others, and none are more serious than a head-on collision.

A passenger in a Buick Enclave SUV was killed when they were struck head-on by a Dodge Ram pickup truck on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 in Dry Ridge, according to a story from LEX18. Kentucky State Police (KSP) investigators responded to the scene of the accident, which happened on US 27 North and Commonwealth Road around 11:52 a.m. They found that the driver of the Ram drifted into the southbound lane, colliding head-on with the Enclave. They pronounced the passenger dead at the scene, while both drivers were transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital with serious injuries.

KSP is continuing to investigate the accident.

Fatal Injuries in Head-on Accidents

As the above story shows, it’s not just the driver of a car that has to worry about fatal injuries in a head-on collision. Unfortunately, passengers in the front seat are also extremely vulnerable in these accidents. Given that the impact often happens at high speeds and involves the front of both vehicles, it’s not surprising to see why these accidents are often fatal. Still, they can result in a wide variety of potentially fatal injuries like:

  • Head injuries – When vehicles crash head-on, the impact often involves your head, face, and neck, leading to both head and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). These impact your breathing and other important functions, which is often fatal.

  • Organ damage – The force of the crash can harm organs inside the body like your heart or lungs, which can be very dangerous and might need urgent medical care.

  • Spine injuries – The sudden stop or impact in a head-on crash can hurt your spine, causing paralysis or loss of feeling below the injury. This can be life-changing or even deadly if it happens in the upper part of your spine or neck.

  • Broken bones – Crashes can break many bones in the body, like the skull, ribs, spine, pelvis, and limbs. Severe breaks can hurt blood vessels and pierce organs, which can be very dangerous.

  • Chest injuries – These crashes also hurt your chest, resulting in rib fractures, lung bruises, or heart problems. Severe chest injuries can make it hard to breathe or cause fatal heart problems.

  • Bleeding – Crashes can cause cuts or bleeding inside the body, which can be very serious if not treated quickly.

Obviously, you could be facing multiple injuries in these accidents. However, it’s important to remember that no matter where the accident happens in Kentucky, you have legal options. Our Kentucky car accident lawyers at Kaufman & Stigger can guide you through this process.
