Whenever you’re riding a motorcycle, there’s only so much you can do to avoid an accident. But it’s not always riskier moves that lead to accidents, they can also happen when vehicles are turning. And even a minor collision with a larger vehicle can result in serious injuries, some of which can be fatal.

A recent story from WBKO detailed such an accident. On Sunday, December 29, 2024, a 33-year-old man riding a motorcycle was killed when he was struck by a Kenmore truck driven by a 29-year-old man from Washington on Nashville Road in Franklin. Kentucky State Police investigators say the man on the motorcycle was traveling north along US-31 W when the man in the truck was exiting the Flying J Travel Center and collided with him.

The Simpson County Coroner pronounced the man on the motorcycle dead at the scene, while KSP continues to investigate. No charges have been filed yet.

What Can You Do After One of These Kinds of Motorcycle Accidents?

It’s not easy sharing the road with commercial trucks or other larger vehicles when you’re riding your motorcycle. As the story above shows, all of the dangers that come from accidents with these vehicles are still present with a motorcycle–and it’s even more likely that the results will be similar in terms of how serious it is.

At the same time, as a victim, you’re going to need to do certain things to make sure your chance at getting financial support is as strong as possible. So, here’s what you should do if you’re involved in a motorcycle accident with a commercial vehicle:

  • Call 911 – If you’re safe, call 911 right away. Emergency responders will treat any injuries and take you to the hospital if needed. Also, local police will document the accident scene and gather witness statements, creating an official report that you can use for an insurance claim.
  • Get contact information – If possible, exchange contact and insurance details with the truck driver and others involved. This information is crucial for filing a claim and can speed up the process.
  • Document the accident scene – Use your phone to take photos and videos of the accident scene, vehicle damage, injuries, road conditions, and anything that might have caused the crash.
  • Keep records – Keep all related documents, such as medical bills, repair estimates, police reports, and insurance communications. These will be critical for proving your losses.
  • Watch your statements – When speaking to police, insurance adjusters, or trucking company representatives, stick to the facts. Don’t guess or admit fault–what you say could be used against you.

Following these steps can strengthen your claim, but it’s still going to be difficult as you try to focus on your health. That’s why it’s important to work with our experienced Kentucky motorcycle accident lawyers at Kaufman & Stigger, PLLC.
