Driving on the Bluegrass Parkway isn’t just scenic this time of year, but it’s also something you probably do every day. Unfortunately, even under the best of conditions, car accidents can strike and leave you facing serious injuries–or worse. It’s difficult to think about, but as a recent story from WDRB shows, it can happen.
The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) responded to a multi-vehicle accident near Mile Marker 6 on the Bluegrass Parkway on Saturday, December 7, 2024. According to investigators, the accident happened around 5:10 p.m., and involved multiple cars. They believe that two of the cars were traveling in the eastbound lane when one lost control, crossed the median and went airborne before crashing head-on with a car driving in the westbound lane. Another vehicle in the westbound lane took damage in the front passenger area.
The driver and two passengers of the car that lost control and went airborne were pronounced dead at the scene by HCSO, a 58-year-old woman, 55-year-old man, and 30-year-old woman. The drivers of the two cars that were hit suffered non-life-threatening injuries. HCSO is continuing to investigate the accident.
What Options Do You Have After a Car Accident in Kentucky?
The story above shows just how easy it can be to be involved in a car accident on the Bluegrass Parkway, or anywhere else in Kentucky for that matter. But it’s not about being in a car accident, it’s about what your options are. As an injury victim, you can file a claim to recover “damages” from whoever was negligent and caused the accident. Here’s what your options are for doing that:
- Filing an insurance claim – After the accident, you can file a claim with either your insurer or the at-fault driver’s insurance company. An insurance adjuster will investigate the accident. While this option is generally faster and less expensive, settlements from insurance companies often fall short of covering your full losses–especially if your losses are more serious.
- Filing a personal injury lawsuit – If the insurance settlement isn’t enough to cover your losses, you can file a lawsuit to try to get additional financial support, or “damages.” This process takes longer and requires more effort, but it can lead to a larger payout. Our legal team handles the hard work, guiding you every step of the way.
Once your claim is filed, you can potentially recover things like:
- Medical bills for treatment and ongoing care
- Costs to repair or replace your vehicle
- Lost income or future earning potential
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress
- Loss of enjoyment of life or companionship
- Funeral expenses in the event of a fatal accident
Filing a claim doesn’t guarantee success, but it provides a vital option for seeking fair damages from the person or group that caused your particular car accident. Remember, in Kentucky, you typically have one year from the accident date to file a personal injury claim. Missing this deadline means losing your chance to recover damages.
